Meet Swan 🤍🐾

Swan urgently needs a new foster home ASAP. She is currently in Prince Edward County, and we need someone who can open their home to this beautiful girl and give her a safe place to continue settling in.

Swan - affectionately known as Chips by her foster kids - is a beautiful 5-year-old Carolina Dog/Labrador Retriever mix who has already shown us just how special she is.

We don’t know much about Swan’s life before coming into care, but despite whatever her past may have held, she is an incredibly sweet girl. Her tail is always wagging, and she loves being right beside her people.

Swan is currently quite underweight, so food is understandably very important to her. She is extremely treat motivated and keeps a close eye on anything edible, but she doesn’t counter surf, whine or beg. She already knows sit and paw and seems incredibly intelligent. She generally only needs to be corrected once before understanding what is expected of her.

She appears to be housetrained and is perfectly happy resting in her crate. She sits before meals and before going in or out of the house. Even though she barely knows her name yet, her recall on a long lead is already surprisingly good. This is one very smart girl.

Swan currently lives with another female dog and enjoys going for walks alongside her, although she isn’t particularly interested in playing. She sometimes gives the resident dog a quick warning when she wants her space, so respectful introductions and a dog who understands boundaries would be important.

She is also curious about the resident cat but has been respectful.

Swan is wonderful around the children in her foster home. She enjoys being around them without needing to be the centre of their attention and has been easygoing with visitors of all ages. She has shown no aggression or fear toward humans, young or old.

Her Carolina Dog traits may help explain some of what we’re seeing in her - she is very intelligent, observant and naturally attentive to her surroundings, while also forming a strong connection with the person she trusts most.

Swan loves watching squirrels and birds and is completely fascinated by sun spots dancing across the floor. She isn’t a ball or stick girl yet, but she’s still discovering what she loves now that she’s experiencing life in a home.

Her foster family currently describes her as high energy, although some of this may come from adjusting to a completely new life while also needing to gain weight. As she learns that food is always coming and that she is safe, we think she will continue to settle and relax.

One particularly sweet detail - Swan hasn’t actually been taken for a car ride yet, but she tries to climb into her foster’s truck several times a day. Maybe going for rides was something she loved in her previous life. ❤️

Swan has all the ingredients of a fantastic family dog. She’s a manageable size, incredibly smart, affectionate without being demanding and has been easygoing with the people she meets. She has also formed a particularly strong connection with one member of her foster family, so we could equally see her becoming an incredibly devoted companion for one person.

Unfortunately, Swan now needs a new foster placement ASAP. We don’t want this sweet girl to lose the progress and security she’s beginning to find. She needs someone who can give her a safe landing place while we continue searching for her forever family.
