Maxine is a 3-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund (aka Chiweenie) mix weighing 14.4 pounds. She was rescued from a  high-kill shelter after being seized from the same severe abuse and hoarding case as her sister, Nylah. Like her sister, she came to us carrying the heavy emotional scars of a life spent in fear and neglect.

Maxine is not a “walk in and fall in love instantly” kind of dog—at least not in the traditional sense. Her love must be earned, piece by piece, through patience, consistency, and kindness. She is a dog who has learned to survive by keeping her distance until she feels certain she is safe. The walls she has built around her heart are strong, but not unbreakable.

When first meeting Maxine, you may notice how she hangs back, watching every movement, unsure whether to trust. If you approach too quickly or reach for her suddenly, she may stiffen, pull away, or give a small warning growl—not out of malice, but from the fear that’s been ingrained in her. This is her way of communicating, “Please, go slow with me.” If you listen to her and move at her pace, she will begin to see you as someone worth taking a chance on. Having a dog in the home helps her to feel safe. 

The first time you’re able to gently pet her without her flinching, or the first time she approaches you on her own, will be a breakthrough moment—one that may bring tears to your eyes. These moments are hard-won and incredibly precious.

Maxine does well with other dogs and enjoys their companionship. She also gets along with cats. Like her sister, she would do best in a home with older children (12 and up) who understand that fearful dogs require space, predictability, and gentle handling. Fast movements, loud voices, and chaos will overwhelm her and set back her progress.

A family willing to take in Maxine should understand:

Maxine has survived a past that no dog should ever experience, but she is still here—still capable of learning, still able to love. For the right person, watching her transform from fear to trust will be one of life’s greatest joys.

She has seen the worst of life—now she’s ready for a patient, gentle soul to show her the best.
